National Coaching Conference report
This year the National Coaching Conference was held in March at Bishop Burton College. We learnt more about UKCC and coaching levels. There were memorable demonstrations on how to start vaulting without a huge horse, play horse ball and carriage drive. Lynne Munro was a willing victim demonstrating pole work. She had not ridden since a serious accident, and used her nervousness to remind us of how our riders may feel, how panic prevents us from hearing and processing orders, and how far a little praise goes to re-motivate us.
Chigwell group has three mechanical horses and detailed the pros and cons. Best of all, they brought an ‘ijoy ride’ for us all to try. This is sold as a slimming device! In reality, it is like a stool you sit on and can programme to move you at four different paces, the first two of which resemble a horse’s paces. Hard to imagine! (www.ijoyride.co.uk). It sells at £399, needs no special housing and just plugs in. The Chigwell riders all prefer it and, of course, it is easy to give everyone a turn. Its use is therapeutic but does not mimic what you can learn on a mechanical horse with an instructor. Otley group has ordered one so we will be able to see how they get on.

Two go training in Wales
It was with a little anticipation that we (Heidi Hutchinson from The Unicorn Centre and Claire Robinson from Bense Bridge) left to attend the Philip Gell Course at Clwyd. After a fairly straightforward journey, a quick tour of he facilities and of our accommodation (fabulous), we felt a little more at home. However, as the programme suggested, after registration it was straight to work; there was a lot to cover in such a short time.
The course was based around Posture, Balance and Movement and, after the various sessions and discussions, these became realistic aims to encourage everyday within our groups.
The course was a positive experience, giving us an opportunity to mix with other experienced delegates and to use the vast knowledge of our course tutors, Lynne Munro and Tessa Chew. It has left us inspired with lots of ideas for training!!

ACPTR 'The Horse in Rehabilitation' Course
30th October-3rd November 2005
I attended the Horse in Rehabilitation course led by the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Therapeutic Riding on 30th October-3rd November 2005. The Part 2 course focuses on The Disabled Rider, progressing assessment skills, treatment plans and evaluation for a variety of disabilities including physical and learning disabilities and behavioural problems. It also developed skills learnt from the Part 1 course including horse assessment and communication skills.
The course was based at The Unicorn Centre in Middlesborough and was taught by Elizabeth Beckerlegge and Sandra Kreutzer-Brett. Therefore we benefited from the knowledge of a very experienced physiotherapist and the additional perspective of a specialised riding instructor.
We were also fortunate that Kathryn Wheelock rode a demonstration for us at the centre. She completed various manoeuvres at a variety of paces, allowing us to analyse horse and rider. She finished by riding Dressage Test 36 superbly to incorporate all skills.
The second part of the course will be held in June 2006, again at The Unicorn Centre and, in addition to further teaching, students will be examined on their assessment skills and will be asked to present their case studies. The case studies are to be completed in between the two courses. My own case study will be completed on a 16yr old lady with Cerebral Palsy. It will take place in York with support from the York Group.
The course so far has been really enjoyable. I feel I have developed my skills as a physiotherapist within the RDA, at my place of work and also personally. Thank-you to the region for their support!
